Review of MicroP

Long ago, an intrepid explorer set out from her isolated world and was never seen again.  Her ship, however, was found by the cyborgs and is now flown by MicroP (Mic).

The ship has a certain subtle intelligence to it.  It has taking a liking to Mic which has enabled the cyborg to uncover many of its secrets.  Now, Mic is on a mission to test his new ship and explore the space and possibly the world the ship came from.  Along the way, Mic discovers something else is headed toward that planet and it has disastrous intentions towards it.

From that planet, Seladon, comes Remi, an adventurous explorer who happens to be the granddaughter of Seladon’s original lost explorer.  Remi and Mic join forces to figure out who is behind the evil and determine what to do about it.

Even though they are from two different worlds, they are surprisingly similar.  It really is a small universe!  In MicroP, adventure and danger abound, but our heroes and heroines are up to the task.

There were some unanswered questions about the bad guys.  For example, why, exactly, did the have a grudge against Seladon?  Perhaps a future story will enlighten us. Speaking of future tales, in MicroP, a couple of Mic’s former shipmates join in the fun/danger.  I was delighted to see these two characters appear, because I’m pretty sure that is a hint of stories to come in this delightful series.

MicroP is for anyone who enjoys a little light romance woven into very entertaining space opera.  5 stars!

Thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book.  My review is my honest opinion.

Review of AzumC

The cyborgs began life as humans.  Captured and basically enslaved, their consciousness was transferred to robots.  They escaped and met up with some good folks who helped transfer them back into cloned human bodies.  The bonus occurs when the former robots get back a little of the high tech abilities they enjoyed as robots and become cyborgs.  These cyborgs have already had a very full life, but their adventures continue.

AzumC is looking for purpose in his new form and joins the Garradian Rescue Service.  The first person he rescues, accidentally, is Dr. Jacklyn Lee (Jac).  Exactly how do you rescue someone ‘accidentally’?  An odd series of events line up precisely.  Tracking down the whys and hows of that odd series of events takes AzumC and Jac on a wild adventure that includes pirates, a hidden world, a mad scientist, a long lost family member, lost boys and time travel.

What a great story!  I think it may be my favorite of The Cyborg Chronicles.  I love that the humans-turned-robot-turned-humans are challenged by their old, yet new, form.  It makes for humor and heart.   Jac, as a time traveler is also a bit out of place in the setting.  Together they make a charming couple that is determined to set things right.  The romance is sweet and understated as the bigger events of the story play out.

If you have not read any of this delightful series, you are missing out!  AzumC is part cozy mystery, part space opera, part time travel fantasy and part romance.  You’ld be hard-pressed to find a better fusion of genres.

Thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book.  My review is my honest opinion.

About AzumC by Pauline Baird Jones

He’s a pilot in search of a mission. She’s a doctor lost in time. Can they fix each other before time runs out.

Az, the robot formerly known as AzumC, is finding his return to mostly human form as challenging as his other crewmates.

A ship would help. A pilot needs a ship. Luckily, the Garradians have a ship and a mission for him and his AI, Woolly: The Garradian Rescue Service.

The pirates are a problem, but an even bigger problem is the mysterious woman who appears on his ship.

Dr. Jacklyn Lee knows who she is and what she does. She doesn’t know where she is or how she got there. She does know one thing: if she gets sent back, she will die.

Review of Catagenesis

First – I love this series!  Cats that can teleport and sometimes read minds.  To be honest, I am not so sure that part is science fiction.  In the Catship series, cats have also evolved to be able to talk.  To humans.  Using human words.  So, cool!

Humans also play a large role.  In Catagenesis, we have Han-Ja Gee.  Drug / information dealer, in debt to a mobster.  “Smarmy” to quote Farah Shine Collins.  (Han-Ja was also in Catapult (book 2) in a very memorable scene involving mind altering drugs (mota), and a talking feline masquerading as a robotic cat.)

Farah is newly awakened after sleeping on a generation ship for 3,000 years.  A former law enforcement liaison, she is not nearly naïve as Han-Ja believes or as she is first presented.  Her mom is Dear Barbara (the cat’s name for her).

After a murder on the gen ship, Farah and Han-Ja team up to figure out what the heck happened.  Dear Barbara is the prime suspect since she is the one who found the body.  Otherwise, clues are nearly non-existent.  What is not non-existent is a lack of suspects.  The non-cat loving crew members blame the cats.  There is of course, much disagreement on that, especially from the cats.

More murders, riots and pandemonium ensue.  The author continues to throw in little mayhems to complicate the story and provide plenty of humor.  For cat lovers, you will get plenty of tail swishing, face washing, brushing against legs and sudden bolting from the room.  Plus, a gigantic superior attitude.  Yep, cats.

Romance is there too.  Farah and Han-Ja do not hit it off at first.  But as these things go, each begins to see the appeal of the other.  Kissing and heroics ensue.

This book is for anyone who enjoys sci-fi romance, cats, mystery and hilarity.  It stands alone, but the first two books are just as good and several characters cross over.  So read the entire series I say!

I received a copy of this book from the author. My review is my honest opinion.

About Catagenesis by Jody Wallace

Han-Ja Gee has made a fine living on Trash Planet trading information and secrets with those who are willing to pay, either in money or in more secrets. He thought he knew everything…until a talking cat interrupted a business meeting. But cats can’t talk. Cats are so rare that only very wealthy people own them. If he can discover the truth about the cats, he can pay off the life-debt he owes and leave Trash Planet forever.

Farah Shine Collins is a passenger on an ancient generation ship who wakes up two thousand years late in a galaxy that barely survived a catastrophic war…and the cats on her ship have become sentient. Her struggle to adjust becomes infinitely worse when she’s asked to partner with an information broker named Han-Ja, who is clearly trouble, to solve a murder on board the ship.

A murder for which the primary suspect is Farah’s mother. A murder that not even mind-reading cats seem to know anything about. A murder that is only the first in a string of deadly attacks that threatens to tear the whole ship apart.

Han-Ja just wanted to escape a brutal racketeer. Farah just wanted a place that she and her mother could call home. Neither expected to fall in love while locked on a murder ship with three thousand terrified colonists and almost as many angry cats. But if they cannot stop the killer, the collateral damage will be a lot more than their hopes and dreams. It will be their lives.
