Review of That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon

Okay, this time I judged a book by the title.  I had to check this one out.  Saving a demon seems like an odd thing to do when one is drunk.  Demons don’t exactly have a stellar reputation.  But this one just looked like a man buried in the rubble of a rockslide.  Plus, he is hot!

It’s only after Cin (short for Cinnamon) saves the demon, Fallon, that he becomes all dangerous and threatening.  Demanding he help her with his mission.  Threatening her family if she does not comply.

Along the way, there are demons, dragons, werewolves, centaurs, and all sorts of non-human beings.  Also, humans, false gods and spice.  Lots of spice.  The mission starts with just Cin, Fallon, and cinnamon sticks. As the mission progresses, it evolves into a movement.

Bullying is a little bit of a theme, starting with Cin’s neighbor who tries to rob her, proceeding to Cin turning the table on the neighbor.  Then comes Fallon.  He uses his size, strength and magic to get what he wants.

The story is told in such a light-hearted, funny manner that the bullying might go unremarked.  For the most part I did enjoy the tale, even if I didn’t like all the characters.

I also enjoyed the name of Cinnamon along with the names of her brothers Cumin and Chili.  But those on the nose names for a spice farming family compete with the cheese seller’s name – Brie.

The book contains the content warning: “This book contains light BDSM, dub con, violence, mentions of sexual violence (no rape or sexual assault occur. It is mentioned in conversation.), and sexually explicit content that could trigger certain audiences.”  Due to the light tone of the book, none of these elements were exaggerated, nor did they offend.  Still, content warnings are always appreciated.

I read this book for free via Amazon’s Prime reading program.   My review is my honest opinion.

About That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming

All I wanted to do was live my life in peace.

All I wanted to do was live my life in peace. Maybe get a cat, expand my spice farm. Really anything that doesn’t involve going on a quest where an orc might rip my face off. But they say the Goddess has favorites. If so, I’m clearly not one of them.

After saving the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, all he wanted to do was kill an evil witch enslaving his people.

I mean, I get it. Don’t get me wrong. But he’s dragging me along for the ride, and I’m kind of peeved about it. On the bright side, he keeps burning off his shirt.
